What South African citizens need to prepare before a legal wedding ceremony.
The standard requirements
For South African citizens, both spouses must provide the original identity and supporting documents confirmed for their circumstances, arrange two adult witnesses, and work with a registered marriage officer for the applicable Marriage Act or Civil Union Act pathway.

The green ID book or smart ID card. Both are accepted. Your ID must be valid and in your possession on the day of the ceremony.

Both witnesses must be 18 years of age or older and must carry a valid South African identity document on the day. They do not need to be related to you.

If you have been previously married
You will need to provide proof that the previous marriage has legally ended. See the divorced and widowed guides for what is required in each case.
Antenuptial contracts
If you intend to marry out of community of property with or without accrual, you will need an antenuptial contract (ANC) signed before the wedding day. See the ANC contracts guide for how this works.
