How far will a marriage officer travel for your wedding?
What is included in travel for a private marriage officer, where surcharges apply, and what to do if your venue is outside the standard allowance — including the Vaal, North West, Mpumalanga, and other provinces.
When you start planning a wedding ceremony, the question of how far the marriage officer will travel is more practical than it might first seem. The honest answer depends on which package you choose, where your venue is, and whether you are happy to pay a travel surcharge for destinations beyond the included travel allowance.
What is included in travel
We are based in Randburg, Johannesburg, and work as your marriage officer across Gauteng — Johannesburg, Pretoria, and the surrounding areas. Where a package includes marriage-officer travel, it is part of the package fee, not added as an extra:
- Full Ceremony: takes place at your venue or home, and includes up to 100 km of round-trip travel from our Randburg office — that is the total journey there and back.
- Mini Ceremony and All-in-One Garden Wedding: take place at our Craighall garden, so there is no marriage-officer travel to arrange.
- Legal Elopement: takes place at our Randburg office, so there is no marriage-officer travel to arrange.

If your Full Ceremony venue is further afield than the included allowance, we can still get there. The additional distance is quoted as extended travel and confirmed before you book.
What counts as extended travel
Extended travel applies when the round trip to your venue exceeds the included allowance. Common destinations where a travel surcharge applies include:
- Hartbeespoort — typically around 70–80 km from Randburg each way, so the round trip exceeds the included allowance
- Magaliesburg — approximately 100–120 km each way, depending on the farm or venue
- Cradle of Humankind / Muldersdrift area — ranges from inside to outside the allowance depending on the specific venue
- Lanseria surrounds — close to the edge of the included allowance, depending on the venue
- Rustenburg — requires extended travel arrangement
If you have a venue in mind and are not sure where it falls, just tell us the name and we will confirm straight away. We would rather give you a clear answer before you budget than let it become a surprise.
How the surcharge works
Extended travel is quoted as a straightforward addition to the package price. It covers the additional drive time and fuel. We do not charge per kilometre — we agree on a flat surcharge for the round trip before you book.
What if the venue is outside Gauteng entirely
We can travel nationally for weddings that have enough lead time and logistics to make it work. Couples who have brought us to remote lodges, wine farms in another province, or beachside ceremonies have all arranged this in advance with an agreed travel cost. It is not a standard service but it is available for the right wedding.
If you are planning something beyond Gauteng, reach out early. The further the venue, the more lead time we need to confirm logistics.
The Vaal region
The Vaal falls within our standard travel range for most ceremony types. If your venue is along the Vaal River, in Parys, Vereeniging, or anywhere in the Vaal Triangle, get in touch and we will confirm your venue specifically. Most Vaal-area venues do not require a travel surcharge.
Does the ceremony location affect the Home Affairs registration?
No. Your assigned registered marriage officer handles the registration and submits it through Randburg Home Affairs regardless of where the ceremony takes place. A ceremony at a Johannesburg venue, a Hartbeespoort lodge, a Vaal River farm, or a destination in Mpumalanga all result in the same registration pathway. The location of the ceremony and the location of registration are independent.
The exception is for foreign nationals, who must complete a required Home Affairs interview in Randburg before the ceremony can take place. That interview happens before your ceremony date — it is not conducted at the venue. If either of you is a foreign national, read the foreign nationals guide before planning a ceremony at a remote venue, as the interview timing needs to be factored into your preparation timeline.
What this means when you are choosing a venue
If the venue you love is in Hartbeespoort or Magaliesburg, a travel surcharge is not a reason to rule it out. It is a modest addition to the total cost of a ceremony, and for many couples the venue they have their heart set on is worth it.
